Music Review and Seizure Experiment Tonight Jan 8, 2017

Welcome to 2017. I'll be joining Rev. BombBack tonight on the Seizure Experiment on WCBN FM, 88.3 MHz in Ann Arbor, click here to listen online a n y w h e r e in the world.

I have the Darkthrone Box Set "Black Death and Beyond," released in May of 2014.

It includes 3 records with samples of their finest recordings, not to be missed radio! Here is what the set looks like:

Darkthrone is a two-piece black/noise metal band with an extensive discography. They emerged alongside Mayhem and Burzum in the chaotic and, at times, neo-fascist Black Metal scene in the early 1990's in Norway. Darkthrone eschews the fascism and delivers great songs! Tonight we'll play some songs from the box set as well as some from the new Darkthrone album, "Arctic Thunder" [October 2016].

Which songs will we play this time? Tune in to find out!

Listen to the Seizure Experiment tonight Sunday January 8, 2017 from 10p-12mid for this AND MORE. Call the DJ line to request your favorite NOISE, Thrash, Hardcore, Metal
734-763-3500. You can also contact us using iMESSAGE/HANGOUTS @ radio@wcbn.org

BRING US YOUR ANGER, We will distill and return it to you in a musical package that cleanses your spirits.

MUSIC REVIEW for 1/8/2017:

Cough: “Still they Pray”
Relapse Records, 2016
NO FCCs

Doom masters from Richmond, Va. bring us a new album after 5 years of near silence. The songs are mostly long and brooding. There are difficult topics covered but no FCCs recognized. The sound of this album is very reminiscent of St. Vitus and other early Doom/Sludge metal efforts. If you are really into this sort of thing, these guys do it well. Start with any song! — D.W.C.B.N.

1. Haunter of the Dark 07:50
2. Possession 10:24
3. Dead Among the Roses 10:46
4. Masters of Torture 07:54
5. Let it Bleed 09:36

7. The Wounding Hours 06:37
8. Still They Pray 04:09

Neil Young: “Peace Trail”
Reprise Records, 2016
NO FCCs

Neil Young is back with another folk/country-rock effort that is lyrically prepared for the next 4-8 years, if you catch my drift. This album was recorded in the wake of a tour and live album with Promise of the Real as Young’s backing band. Neil opts for Jim Keltner on drums and Paul Bushnell on bass, in lieu of the band. This is not a ground-breaking album for Neil, but the songs are solid, the messages are timely [my faves: 4, 5, 7, 8]. This is great for daytime radio and could even be included in the Down Home Show.

Ahoe-Ahoea: “True Love Never Dies”
Bunkerpop, 2016
FCC on 4

Ahoe-Ahoea is a Dutch DIY/Indie Post-Punk band whose members obviously listened heavily to Television and the Clash before forming and recording this [originally] self-released tape in 1983. Bunkerpop has re-issued this recording in LP format, as you can see. The songs are bouncy and energetic. There is nothing very original about the sound and songs here, but the playing is solid and there are a few catchy hooks! Yes, Ahoe-Ahoea is a reference to the sound created by the Tarzan films actor Johnny Weissmuller. A sample of that vocal provides the basis for the first track. If you like Television, you will like this album, unless you are one of those snarky listeners who will dismiss this as derivative, which it is. I got over that, thoroughly enjoyed it several times on my turntable over the past 2-3 weeks — D.W.C.B.N.

Below are the music reviews I did for the station this week. I have a feeling you might be hearing some of this GosT band tonight on the S.E. Don't miss out!

GosT: NON PARADISI

GosT: “NON PARADISI”
Blood Music 2016
NO FCCs

I’ve heard this referred to as “Synth Wave” and if that is a type of “Metal,” then I fully agree with use of that descriptor. I would describe the music as metal played on synths with a few featured vocalists. Themes are centered on horror and satanic aphorisms, e.g. the liner notes contain this quote attributed to “Lucifer” in Milton’s Paradise Lost: “BETTER TO REIGN IN HELL THAN TO SERVE IN HEAVEN.” Play anytime of day! Great for freeform. I don’t have any favorite tracks, I like each equally. Enjoy!

A reissue from the original 1958 recording tapes. Mganga means “medicine man.” An absolutely delightful addition to our collection for Leisure Experimenters and beyond. All songs are excellent [from my newcomer’s perspective]. Pick a track, sit back and relax! - D.W.C.B.N.

Who Should Lead Our Ann Arbor School Board in 2017?

We are numb. We recently elected a billionaire demagogue for US President with authoritarian tendencies who is poised to implement austerity. Our futures are uncertain, funding for basic life sustaining needs like food and shelter are at risk for the least fortunate among us. Our children are at risk for losing even more funding with Betsy DeVos as incoming US Secretary of Education. We are going to be presented with budgets that are unsustainable for our public schools.

When I spoke with Christine Stead last Thursday December 8 [the day after the board meeting], she said "I think we need new leadership for our next phase of work serving students and community." I agree with Christine. We need new leadership for our Ann Arbor public school board.

Christine thinks we need new leadership, but she is also convinced that we should appoint Deb Mexicotte to the open seat left by Donna Lasinski. This is inconsistent thinking. In addition to this inconsistency, let's not forget that Mexicotte would be resigning the seat she lost in the election on Nov 8, to accept appointment to this seat vacated by Lasinski.

Tell me what democracy looks like, because this whole set-up seems like an anti-democratic precedent for Ann Arbor Schools governance.

Is that who we are now, fellow Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor residents?

Deb Mexicotte is a good corporate-style manager. She can manage budgets and swim past the workers she/we throw under the proverbial school bus. But, that is not the leader we need right now. We need a leader who is going to fight to fund the education of each and every one of the children/young adults in our communities.

So who do I think the board should pick? I read the materials and I think all the other candidates are qualified and bring good perspectives, represent key constituencies in order to lead us in the direction of full funding for schools.

I am going to let the group decide on that with one caveat: I think that choosing Hunter Van Valkenberg would be a mistake here. While I value his voice and connections with organized labor [I'll admit it: I'm a fan of unions], I think that it might be better to pick one of the other candidates. If we take Deb and Hunter out of the running, I think we could find common ground with one of the other candidates. Perhaps current board members could discuss which of the other candidates have the leadership qualities needed for our children and communities.

I trust that our Ann Arbor School Board Trustees will be very careful at this juncture in our local/state/national political-cultural climate. We need to orient ourselves toward a leadership-management model. We also need to reclaim the common ground that has thus far eluded us on this particular issue: getting our elected leaders at the local and state levels to appropriately fund all necessary school resources for our children, our young adults and our future.

****************************************
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Ann Arbor School Board meeting takes place tonight Wednesday Dec. 14 at 7pm at Forsythe Middle School 1655 Newport Road. There will *not* be public commentary time before the selection is announced, I'm told.

We Are the Terrorists We Have Been Fighting All Along

March 1, 1954: "Castle Bravo" The first United States test of a dry fuel hydrogen bomb, detonated over the Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands. From 1946 to 1958, the United States conducted 67 tests in the Marshall Islands.
We watch in horror, powerless to help people in Aleppo sharing their final thoughts before dying at the hands of Assad and the Russians.
We carry with us the illusion that it was humane to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, we aided tyrants like Pinochet in the torture and repression of the people of Chile, We sent aid and support to militias in Central America in the 80's reponsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths. We massacred in My Lai, We deployed white phosphorus and massacred thousands more in Fallujah and beyond in a war that was predicated on false information about others' possessing weapons of mass destruction.
So when all the self-satisfied US politicians come forward to point fingers at our current enemies, Russia and Assad, remember this:

We are the terrorists we have been fighting all along.

Follow-up to Washtenaw County Exec Comm Meeting Dec. 10, 2016

I am getting criticism for sharing these notes from the #WCDP Exec Comm yesterday. Next time I'll definitely ask the group before publishing.

Big Picture:

No, but seriously...

I think if Michigan Democrats want to invite people in, they need to be transparent about processes like this. There were no strategy or tactics discussed at this meeting. It was a leadership decision-making business meeting. If people feel I have wrongly characterized what they had to say during discussion, I am glad to make the appropriate corrections to the text on my site. People who may become members or who may become more involved members would like to know that all points of view were given equal air time. That happened yesterday, mostly.

Mostly.

I am hopeful for the future here in Washtenaw County. You will see regular updates on the progress toward a better Democratic Party on this site. Stay tuned, feel free to subscribe... FOR FREE :)
