SEIZURE EXPERIMENT TONIGHT 10PM-12MID, SUNDAY DEC 18 + New Music Review feat. GosT and Tak Shindo [1958 reissue]

I am hosting the Seizure Experiment tonight on WCBN FM Ann Arbor, 88.3 MHz in #Ypsi/Ann Arbor. You can stream online at by clicking HERE

I have no idea what I am going to do, but it will be a blast. You could tune in and contribute to the content if you wish. Call 734-763-3500 or AOL IM at wcbnfm. You can also message using IMessage/Hangouts at radio@wcbn.org

Below are the music reviews I did for the station this week. I have a feeling you might be hearing some of this GosT band tonight on the S.E. Don't miss out!

GosT: NON PARADISI

GosT: “NON PARADISI”
Blood Music 2016
NO FCCs

I’ve heard this referred to as “Synth Wave” and if that is a type of “Metal,” then I fully agree with use of that descriptor. I would describe the music as metal played on synths with a few featured vocalists. Themes are centered on horror and satanic aphorisms, e.g. the liner notes contain this quote attributed to “Lucifer” in Milton’s Paradise Lost: “BETTER TO REIGN IN HELL THAN TO SERVE IN HEAVEN.” Play anytime of day! Great for freeform. I don’t have any favorite tracks, I like each equally. Enjoy!

A reissue from the original 1958 recording tapes. Mganga means “medicine man.” An absolutely delightful addition to our collection for Leisure Experimenters and beyond. All songs are excellent [from my newcomer’s perspective]. Pick a track, sit back and relax! - D.W.C.B.N.

Who Should Lead Our Ann Arbor School Board in 2017?

We are numb. We recently elected a billionaire demagogue for US President with authoritarian tendencies who is poised to implement austerity. Our futures are uncertain, funding for basic life sustaining needs like food and shelter are at risk for the least fortunate among us. Our children are at risk for losing even more funding with Betsy DeVos as incoming US Secretary of Education. We are going to be presented with budgets that are unsustainable for our public schools.

When I spoke with Christine Stead last Thursday December 8 [the day after the board meeting], she said "I think we need new leadership for our next phase of work serving students and community." I agree with Christine. We need new leadership for our Ann Arbor public school board.

Christine thinks we need new leadership, but she is also convinced that we should appoint Deb Mexicotte to the open seat left by Donna Lasinski. This is inconsistent thinking. In addition to this inconsistency, let's not forget that Mexicotte would be resigning the seat she lost in the election on Nov 8, to accept appointment to this seat vacated by Lasinski.

Tell me what democracy looks like, because this whole set-up seems like an anti-democratic precedent for Ann Arbor Schools governance.

Is that who we are now, fellow Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor residents?

Deb Mexicotte is a good corporate-style manager. She can manage budgets and swim past the workers she/we throw under the proverbial school bus. But, that is not the leader we need right now. We need a leader who is going to fight to fund the education of each and every one of the children/young adults in our communities.

So who do I think the board should pick? I read the materials and I think all the other candidates are qualified and bring good perspectives, represent key constituencies in order to lead us in the direction of full funding for schools.

I am going to let the group decide on that with one caveat: I think that choosing Hunter Van Valkenberg would be a mistake here. While I value his voice and connections with organized labor [I'll admit it: I'm a fan of unions], I think that it might be better to pick one of the other candidates. If we take Deb and Hunter out of the running, I think we could find common ground with one of the other candidates. Perhaps current board members could discuss which of the other candidates have the leadership qualities needed for our children and communities.

I trust that our Ann Arbor School Board Trustees will be very careful at this juncture in our local/state/national political-cultural climate. We need to orient ourselves toward a leadership-management model. We also need to reclaim the common ground that has thus far eluded us on this particular issue: getting our elected leaders at the local and state levels to appropriately fund all necessary school resources for our children, our young adults and our future.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Ann Arbor School Board meeting takes place tonight Wednesday Dec. 14 at 7pm at Forsythe Middle School 1655 Newport Road. There will *not* be public commentary time before the selection is announced, I'm told.

We Are the Terrorists We Have Been Fighting All Along

March 1, 1954: "Castle Bravo" The first United States test of a dry fuel hydrogen bomb, detonated over the Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands. From 1946 to 1958, the United States conducted 67 tests in the Marshall Islands.
We watch in horror, powerless to help people in Aleppo sharing their final thoughts before dying at the hands of Assad and the Russians.
We carry with us the illusion that it was humane to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, we aided tyrants like Pinochet in the torture and repression of the people of Chile, We sent aid and support to militias in Central America in the 80's reponsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths. We massacred in My Lai, We deployed white phosphorus and massacred thousands more in Fallujah and beyond in a war that was predicated on false information about others' possessing weapons of mass destruction.
So when all the self-satisfied US politicians come forward to point fingers at our current enemies, Russia and Assad, remember this:

We are the terrorists we have been fighting all along.

Follow-up to Washtenaw County Exec Comm Meeting Dec. 10, 2016

I am getting criticism for sharing these notes from the #WCDP Exec Comm yesterday. Next time I'll definitely ask the group before publishing.

Big Picture:

No, but seriously...

I think if Michigan Democrats want to invite people in, they need to be transparent about processes like this. There were no strategy or tactics discussed at this meeting. It was a leadership decision-making business meeting. If people feel I have wrongly characterized what they had to say during discussion, I am glad to make the appropriate corrections to the text on my site. People who may become members or who may become more involved members would like to know that all points of view were given equal air time. That happened yesterday, mostly.

Mostly.

I am hopeful for the future here in Washtenaw County. You will see regular updates on the progress toward a better Democratic Party on this site. Stay tuned, feel free to subscribe... FOR FREE :)

Seizure Leisure Music Review: Metallica and Body/Head

On some recent Mondays, I have been attending WCBNs Music Review meeting. These happen most Mondays at 630pm at WCBN lobby in basement of Student Activities Building at UM Ann Arbor. This week, I reviewed the new Metallica as well as a new live release from Body/Head. Check it out. Also please feel free to tune in every Sunday from 10pm-12mid to WCBN for the Seizure Experiment: a two hour hardcore/metal/doom/noise freeform specialty show with a rotating set of hosts including Kristin [of Tight Pants fame], Brandok [of Brandok fame], Marie, Rev. Bomb-Back, and me [DJ-Who-Cannot-Be-Named]

You can listen to WCBN at 88.3 MHz in Ypsi/Ann Arbor area [doesn't yet go much beyond] OR you can stream at http://www.wcbn.org/listen

Metallica: “HARDWIRED...TO SELF-DESTRUCT”
Blackened Recordings 2016
*FCCs only on track 1*

This is an adequate thrash/rock record. Nothing really stands out, but songs are decent. I hear echoes of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest in the thrash tunes. I am not really feeling any sort of continuity with this album, songs are just next to each other, a la Tom Waits “Orphans”  I agree with a fellow WCBN DJ that this is the best Metallica album since the one they did with Lou Reed :) -- D.W.C.B.N.

Disc 1
Hardwired [FCC]         3:09 “We’re so fucked” Thrash-delight! Abrupt end.
Atlas, Rise!                 6:29 Straight forward
Now That We're Dead 6:59 Abrupt end
Moth Into Flame          5:51 Chugging along metal machine :)
Halo On Fire               8:15 Epic dual solo guitar doubling intro, abrupt rock ending.
Dream No More 6:30 This is basically a rock tune. Fun.

NOTE: “Halo on Fire” and “Dream No More” are in wrong order on CD jacket song list.

Disc 2
Confusion                    6:41 “War is never done.” More thrashy chugging.
ManUNkind                 6:56 Pretty bass/guitar intro; rock tune; Helmet-like riffs; abrupt
                                              ending
Here Comes Revenge 7:18 Rock tune with double bass drum at times. guitar tone fade
                                              ending.
Am I Savage?              6:30 Sabbath-esque guitar riffing. Abrupt ending
Murder One                 5:45  Chorus effect-laden guitar intro. More rock. Abrupt ending
Spit Out The Bone        7:09 Drumroll, guitarchug intro. THRASH. Somehwhat abrupt tone
                                              fade end.

Body/Head: “No Waves”
Matador 2016
No FCCs

Live Album. Kim Gordon and Bill Nace weave guitar licks with mostly dissonant interactions, feedback, delay and sustain effects fill the room. At times ghost harmonies/atonalities emerge. Vocals are present, yet sparse. At times, the singing is formless/wordless and typical Gordon-style: decidedly off-key. I enjoy this stuff, but it is not for everyone :) Sections of this are good for music bed. I also think this fits well into any freeform show, especially good for layering if you are tripping and going that way. -- D.W.C.B.N.

UPDATED::WCDP Exec Comm Meeting: 1230pm-2pm; 200 N Main Ann Arbor

I am one of four Ann Arbor Ward 3 Washtenaw County Democratic Party [WCDP] Executive Committee members. There are 66 of us representing all County districts/regions. We are voting on who will lead the WCDP in 2017 today from 1230-2pm at 200 N Main in Downtown.

The four leadership positions we are voting on:

Chair
[currently Chris Savage]

Vice-Chair
[currently Hedieh Briggs]

Treasurer
[currentlyDoug Scott]

Secretary
[currentlyLinda Horne]

Question for WCDP bureaucrats: What are the functions of the County and State Central Committees?

[More to follow: bookmark, http://seizureleisure.blogspot.com]

---12:40ish-pm
A2 Democratic Party Club members are resolving an issue centered on fiscal responsibility with outgoing A2 Dem Part Chair Mike Henry. Not up to speed on this particular issue.

WCDP meeting is being postponed to deal with this discussion. Conan Smith has said that he thinks this is a topic better talked about at another A2 Dem Party meeting

A2 dem party motion: Treasurer Alex Yerkey may distribute treasurer's report to anyone requesting it.
Motion passes unanimously.

--12:50ish
WCDP Exec Comm being called to order. Mary Hall-Thiam is voted in as temporary chair for this meeting only.

Moved and 2nd Chris Savage for chair: He introduces self, Precinct Delegate from Scio Twp. Incumbent chair. Vision is to continue what we are doing to make party relevant to those not currently included. We need to be there at the political level for many identities and interest groups currently excluded from the policy table. I don't see the job as herding cats, but herding creative types which is more difficult. My first question about channeling energy is, "What do you want to do?"

Peter Ways from AAEA is acknowledging no other candidates. He is offering support to Chris with hesitations re: support for anti labor school board candidates. Asks Chris to work on behind the scenes interpersonal interaction patterns that are often perceived as negative.

Derek From EMUFT shares that he thinks Chris is a good leader to bring us together

Mary Hall-Thiam shares that she thinks Chris is a good person to let bygones be bygones.

Chris voted in unanimously

Hedieh Briggs for Vice Chair nominated

Hedieh says she is from Iran. She has been involved as a precinct delegate on the org comm. She is a systems thinker. She serves on several county, district and state level committees. When we need to be present, I want your support. I want your ideas.

Hedieh voted in unanimously.

Linda Horne nominated for Secretary for the WCDP board.
Susan Baskett gives credit to Linda for bringing the Ypsi and willow run school districts together

Linda voted in unanimously

Doug Scott nominated for Treasurer.

Got his first political involvement in NY at a "civic storefront"
in 2008 a bunch of us joined Chris as precinct organizers.
Treasurey: We have 4 accounts .... Each month I take a screenshot of what our account looks like ahead of the board meeting. footnotes at the bottom acknowledging what we do.
I spend money ONLY at the direction of the board
Doug is willing to open books and share info with individual members, is less inclined to publish open books on the internet or to send things over the internet.

Doug Scott voted in unanimously.

Mary Thiam turns things back over to Chris Savage, newly re-elected  chair.

Question from Rod Casey: What's going to happen with the video chair and outreach?

Chris answers: We are required to vote on all positions within 45 days of Jan 1 for County and State Committees

Rod notes that some people have been knocked off the board and we need to figure out who is making what decisions moving forward. Which decisions do the Exec Board make? Which decisions do the Exec Comm make? Answer from Mary T is that Exec Comm will make decision on the rest of the officers for WCDP.
Kathy W says we have a Gen Membership meeting on First Saturday of the Month
Chris says we have to make the decision about committees in this body [Exec Committee]

Susan B suggests we do an Exec comm meeting on Jan 7 before Gen Membership meeting that same day, affirmed by unanimous vote

Peter Ways: offers a resolution: needs 2/3 support of Exec Comm to pass.

Jeremy Glick is concerned that this Exec Comm to recommend who to appoint to the board is out of our area of influence.
Doug Scott is good with the resolution as it reflects values.
Another speaker supports this as a values issue, but does not think there is a divide to address.
Edits are being made on the floor, friendly amendments offered.
Peter Ways, disputes that there isn't a divide and perhaps people who haven't attended AA School Board meetings in recent past are simply not aware of this divide. But not enough dispute to not accept the friendly amendments.

Here is the final text of the resolution for a unity candidate for Donna Lasinski's seat on the Ann Arbor School Board. This resolution was sent to the Current and newly elected school board members via email from Chris Savage [WCDP Chair] This resolution was passed with well over 2/3 support, but not unanimously by the 66-member Washtenaw County Executive Committee:

Process question: Is it 2/3 of the majority or 2/3 of the votes cast?

New Motion: We elect committees individually,
Susan B says this will make for a long meeting.
Question posed: Will every individual give a speech?
Friendly Amendment: restrict the speech to a 60 seconds? 2nd

[a bunch of amendments re: the process for electing reps to committees at county and state level.
Process approved unanimously]

Jason Morgan announces that holiday party for 12 District is now postponed

Meeting concluded 220pm

#########This document was updated 12/11/2016 at about 330pm and then again around 8pm 12/11/2016 when Chris Savage pointed out a glaring error on my part. Thanks Chris!
